What Does It Mean to Put on the Armor of God?
Ephesians 6 is more than a familiar passage — it's a daily instruction for how believers stand firm in spiritual battle.
The Battle Is Real
Ephesians 6:11-12 tells us to put on the whole armor of God because 'we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness.' The armor of God is not a metaphor for nice living — it is survival equipment for a real war. The moment you belong to Jesus, you have an enemy. And the armor is exactly what you need to stand.
Belt of Truth
The belt gathered the soldier's garment and held the sword. Truth is where it all begins — knowing who God is, who you are in Christ, and refusing to live by the lies of the enemy. When your life is grounded in truth, everything else stays in place. Jesus said, 'If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free' (John 8:31-32).
Breastplate of Righteousness
The breastplate protected the soldier's vital organs, especially the heart. Notice whose righteousness it is — not ours, but Christ's. When the enemy accuses you, you do not defend yourself with your own record. You stand in the righteousness Jesus earned for you (2 Corinthians 5:21). That is protection the enemy cannot pierce.
Shoes of the Gospel of Peace
A soldier needs sure footing. Paul says our feet are to be 'shod with the readiness given by the gospel of peace' (Ephesians 6:15). Knowing you are at peace with God through Jesus gives you a firm place to stand — and makes you ready to carry that peace to a world that desperately needs it.
Shield, Helmet, and Sword
The shield of faith extinguishes the flaming darts of doubt, fear, and accusation. The helmet of salvation guards your mind with the assurance of who you are and where you are going. And the sword of the Spirit — the Word of God — is the one offensive weapon, the same weapon Jesus used to answer every temptation in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11).
Putting It On Daily
Notice the instruction: put it on. The armor is not automatic. We put it on through prayer, through reading Scripture, through gathering with other believers, and through choosing faith when it would be easier to give in. It is a daily decision to suit up, because the battle does not take days off — and neither does the God who equips us for it.
