Jesus Is King: What Does That Mean for Our Everyday Lives?

When we say 'Jesus is King,' we're not just reciting a creed — we're declaring a reality that changes how we work, love, and live.

A Kingdom Not of This World

When we say 'Jesus is King,' we are not repeating a religious slogan. We are stating a fact about reality. Before Jesus went to the cross, He told Pilate, 'My kingdom is not of this world' (John 18:36). His kingship does not depend on elections, economies, or empires. It is eternal, unshakable, and already in motion. That means the question is never whether Jesus is King — Scripture is clear that He is. The real question is whether we are living like it.

What Does a King Actually Do?

A king rules, protects, provides, and leads. Jesus does all of this perfectly. He rules over every authority (Colossians 1:16-18), protects His people from the one who seeks to destroy them, provides for every need according to His riches (Philippians 4:19), and leads us as the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for the sheep (John 10:11). A king also gives identity to his subjects. To say Jesus is King is to say we belong to a Kingdom with a real Sovereign who is good, just, and for us.

Surrendering the Throne of Self

If Jesus is King, then we are not. That sounds obvious, but in practice most of us live as though we are the center of our own story. We want our schedule, our money, our reputation, and our comfort to be the priority. Jesus said, 'If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me' (Luke 9:23). Daily surrender is not a one-time prayer — it is the ongoing posture of someone who has recognized who sits on the throne.

Living Under Kingship Every Day

Believing Jesus is King changes the ordinary. It changes how we work (Colossians 3:23), how we spend money (Matthew 6:19-21), how we treat our spouse and neighbors, and how we respond when life is hard. A citizen of the Kingdom represents the King in every room they walk into. That is a high calling, but it is also a freeing one — because the weight of running the universe was never on our shoulders to begin with.

Wearing the Declaration

This is part of why we do what we do at Kingdom Threads. The words we wear are small, daily declarations of a much bigger truth: Jesus is King, and His Kingdom has no end. A shirt will not change a life on its own, but the truth behind it can. Every time you put it on, let it be a reminder of whose you are and Who you serve.
