What Does It Mean to Be Set Apart as a Christian?

To be holy means to be set apart — not to blend in, but to belong to God entirely.

What Does 'Holy' Actually Mean?

The word 'holy' shows up all over Scripture, and for a lot of us it has become a religious word that lost its meaning. But holy simply means 'set apart.' When God says, 'Be holy, for I am holy' (1 Peter 1:16), He is saying: be set apart for me, the way I am set apart from everything else. To be a Christian is to be set apart — not to blend in, but to belong to God entirely.

Called Out of Darkness

Peter writes, 'But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light' (1 Peter 2:9). That is who you are if you belong to Jesus. You were called out of darkness. You are now a person for God's own possession. That is not a downgrade — it is the highest identity a person can have.

Different by Design

Being set apart means we will look different. Paul writes, 'Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind' (Romans 12:2). The world says: live for yourself, chase more, look out for number one. The Kingdom says: live for God, love your neighbor, carry your cross. A set-apart life is not weird for the sake of being weird — it is different because it is shaped by a different Lord.

Set Apart for Purpose, Not Pride

Holiness can turn into pride if we forget why we were set apart. We are not set apart because we are better than anyone else. We are set apart because of God's grace (Ephesians 2:8-10). The purpose of being set apart is never to look down on others. It is to reflect the God who rescued us, and to carry His light into dark places. Holiness is for the world's good, not our superiority.

Living Set Apart Daily

So what does being set apart actually look like on a Tuesday? It looks like honesty when lying would be easier. It looks like kindness when everyone else is harsh. It looks like purity in a culture of compromise, and generosity in a culture of accumulation. It is the daily decision to live like you belong to God — because you do. And when we live that way, Jesus said, people see our good works and give glory to our Father in heaven (Matthew 5:16).
