What Is the Great Commission—and Why Does It Matter?

Jesus' final instruction wasn't a suggestion. It's the mission of every believer and every church.

The Final Words of Jesus

Some of the last words Jesus spoke before ascending into heaven were these: 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you' (Matthew 28:18-20). This passage is called the Great Commission, and it is not a suggestion. It is the mission Jesus left for every one of His followers.

Go Therefore

The word 'go' is not just for missionaries who cross oceans. Every believer is sent somewhere — into a workplace, a school, a neighborhood, a family. 'Go' means live on purpose wherever God has placed you. The Great Commission starts across the street, not only across the world. The question is not whether you are called to make disciples; the question is where God has already sent you.

Make Disciples

Notice Jesus did not say 'make converts.' He said 'make disciples.' A convert is someone who decides. A disciple is someone who is learning to follow Jesus for a lifetime. That is a much bigger calling. It means walking with people, pointing them to Christ, teaching them His Word, and helping them take their next step of obedience. Disciple-making is slow, relational, and worth it.

Baptizing and Teaching

The Great Commission has two ongoing actions: baptizing and teaching. Baptism is the public declaration that someone belongs to Jesus — a picture of His death and resurrection. Teaching is the lifelong work of learning to obey everything He commanded. Together they show us what a healthy disciple looks like: someone whose faith is both publicly declared and increasingly shaped by God's Word.

I Am With You Always

Jesus did not just give a mission and leave us to figure it out. He ended with a promise: 'And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age' (Matthew 28:20). The same Jesus who has all authority is the One who goes with us. That promise is what makes the mission possible. We do not make disciples in our own strength — we make them in His, with Him beside us.

Why It Still Matters

The Great Commission has not expired. There are still people who have never heard the name of Jesus, and there are still people in your life who need someone to show them what following Christ actually looks like. This is why we exist as a brand — to equip believers to live the message out loud, so that the people around us see Jesus in us and are drawn to Him.
